About this Art:
The cougar, or mountain lion - now there's a very interesting subject. They are very secretive and very few people have actually seen a live cougar in the wild. They move at night much of the time and they are extremely cautious, however, they do have their moments of restfulness and peace when they are not "on guard" or hunting wild game. I have portrayed this big lion in the afternoon as he lazily walks across a log connecting two pieces of shoreline on a high mountain lake in the Rockies. He has had plenty to eat and there's no intensity in his movements. He is relaxed and happy - not necessarily the normal situation portrayed in paintings of their strenuous life. It is sunny and warm. The waters of the lake are smooth and peaceful and the mountain grandeur is beautiful and breathtaking. I thought of the opposite of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and I liked the feeling of a "Bridge over Peaceful Waters" - something we don't often think of. I also thought of John Denver's words: "sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy" - how true that is. The beauty and peace of nature is so good for our souls.
