About this Art:
The most numerous species of deer in the Western United States is the mule deer, depicted here. Their ears are quite large or long, kind of like a mule's ears are long, thus they have been called mule deer. The breeding season takes place in mid November. The bucks fight each other for mating rights with the does and supremacy of their herds. These battles can be short and rather easy but some of these fights can be long, exhausting, and dangerous. The bucks use their sharp horns as the main weapon to gain the victory over their opponent. The wounds can sometimes be severe, causing blindness in an eye or a punctured lung, etc. Occasionally two large bucks will lock horns and they cannot separate themselves and will die together from exhaustion and starvation. When we were kids, we used to play a game called "The Battle of Bunker Hill" - the name was borrowed from the history of the Revolutionary War. It was a fight to see who was the strongest, the quickest, and the toughest kid. It was usually fought on a hill of dirt on a construction site. Sometimes we got hurt a bit, but it was all part of the game and a lot of fun, so I borrowed the name to put on this beautiful mule deer buck and the hill where he fought his battle.
