About this Art:
Many immigrants to the Utah territory came by handcart because they couldn't afford wagons and teams. They pushed and pulled heavily loaded handcarts over 1300 miles to get to their new home - the valley of Salt Lake. This is the Ellsworth company, which was the very first handcart company to enter the Salt Lake Valley. That is why it is being met with a marching band and the volunteers of the Nauvoo Legion. This is what happened the day that they came into the valley; there was a big parade and they let the handcart pioneers lead the parade with the band and the soldiers. Brigham Young was there, the leaders of the church were there, it was a big celebration. The mountains in the background are the Wasatch Front and the highest peak there is Mount Olympus. The uniforms worn by the soldiers are the correct uniforms - that's what they looked like at the time.
