About this Art:

This scene depicts the death of Mary Murray Murdoch. She was from Scotland and her son John had previously gone West to be a sheepherder under the request of Brigham Young. She was traveling with the family of my great great grandfather, James Steele and his wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth’s mother Mary Ann George Wylie was also with them. All had converted to the Church in Scotland, and they headed West in the Martin Handcart Company. Mary, under 5 feet tall made it as far as she could go- just a little ways from Chimney Rock, Nebraska. As she lay in the arms of her loved ones here, she told them, “Tell John I Died With My Face Toward Zion.”
