About this Art:

This scene takes place in the Utah territory 1860's/70's. These two men are United States Marshals for the Utah territory. The long-haired Marshall on the right is Porter Rockwell, a very famous and feared lawman of his day. He was expert with rifle and pistol and was in many gun fights enforcing the law. He was legendary in Utah. He was ambushed several times, but the outlaws who ambushed him were the ones who paid for it. In this painting you can see him and his partner are returning fire upon their attackers. Many times Rockwell followed the trail of the outlaws by moonlight. He was very good at it. This particular attack depicted in the painting was a moonlight ambush. Rockwell died peacefully in his sleep in Salt Lake City at his livery stable when he was about 70 years old. He was well-loved by the people of the Utah territory for his brave defense of their rights and their property.
