About this Art:

Cougars, or mountain lions as they sometimes are called, pretty much stay in the mountains and the deserts and live off of the wildlife that they kill and eat there. However, a certain percentage of cougars do come down into the ranches and farms near the mountains and sometimes kill the livestock of the ranchers. In this particular painting, a cowboy is on the trail, or following the trail, of a cougar that has killed and eaten part of a calf. He will stay on the tracks until he catches up to the big cat and with some luck will be able to kill the cat before he kills more livestock. Cougars are known to kill cattle, horses (especially young horses), chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, etc. Humans are attacked occasionally by cougars, in fact two of my neighbors had personal encounters with cougars here in Star Valley and one was physically attacked by a cat. I captured this friend's experience in a different painting, titled "Out of Nowhere."
