About this Art:
In the cowboy world, roping is an essential skill. There are many types of loops that are needed depending on the situation, the animal to be caught, the direction one is throwing from, and the angle that is needed. The Houlihan Loop is thrown backwards. It causes the loop to open up more round instead of oblong - it's a very good loop to catch horses with because it's harder for them to dodge the loop. A good man with a Houlihan is hard to beat when it comes the catching horses. Why it is called Houlihan I'm not sure. I think it's an Irish word, maybe the guy that invented it was Irish - I have no idea but anyway it's a very good horse loop and works well on cattle too. We used to catch all our horses with the Houlihan for the corral this way.
