About this Art:
This beautiful painting depicts a pivotal moment in the history of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Captain Meriwether Lewis first met the Shoshonis in August of 1805 near the continental divide between present day Idaho and Montana. The Shoshonis had the horses Lewis needed for the crossing of the Rocky Mountains. Captain Lewis approaches them unarmed with only three men. They came armed and ready to fight with 60 warriors. The success of the expedition hung in the balance. I painted this scene for the bicentennial commemoration of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.
