About this Art:
This painting depicts the cow boss (the one in the roundup in charge of everything that goes on) and the cow boss's right hand man. It's time to go to bed, but they're still talking about the roundup and what they'll do in the morning. They are discussing strategies for how they'll gather the cattle out of certain areas - mountains, gulches, valleys, rocky areas, etc.. They're trying to figure out how to cover all that ground with the cowboys they have and get all the cattle out of there. They're trying to decide the best way to work each type of country and which personalities to match with which roles. Some cowboys are more willing to take a risk and they will be sent to the rockiest, toughest country. Others are all around good hands but maybe not quite as adventurous. They'll be sent into tough country but not quite as dangerous. Then you have the old guys who are experienced but don't have the strength and stamina, and the young guys who have the strength and stamina but not the experience. They'll try to put these two groups of cowboys together. That's the idea of the strategy - to use the men and horses at hand, and take the best advantages of the land they have to ride in, the number of cattle to get out, and the breed of cattle they have. Some kinds are easier to roundup while others tend to be a little more wild. They know all the spots they can hide and resist being gathered together. It's a lot to take into consideration! You really have to try and use your men and horses the best you can.
