This is a depiction of something that happens so often in the west on different cattle ranges. Sometimes water is not very plentiful because of drought or not enough snow in the winter to provide good water runoff in the spring. In situations like that, just a little bit of water makes all the difference between life and death, success or failure. The cowboy and his horse in this scene are mighty grateful for just enough water to quench their thirst. Have you ever been really, really thirsty and could not get anything to drink? I have been there and I know what that’s like. When you are alone in the wilderness and you can’t get water and it’s hot - bad things start to happen pretty fast. It’s one of the few times in my life when I was becoming delirious. It’s not a fun experience. We take water for granted so much, but the source of it can be cut off very quickly under various circumstances and if you can’t get water, you are in a very dangerous situation. In these situations, a little bit is everything.
